How do overhead bins work?

Will that bag stay up there when we hit a bump?

Overhead bins are rated for a maximum load and have latches that hold the door shut. Crew check that bins are closed and secure before pushback, takeoff and landing.

Heavy items go under the seat in front, because items can shift in flight and the bin is also the first thing to hit the floor in a very hard landing. Place bags wheels-first and close the door gently so it latches.

A little deeper

Bins are tested with loads and dynamic crash conditions as part of certification. Newer pivot bins tilt down to make loading easier and give more space.

Crew cannot store everything for everyone: cabin baggage allowance rules are there for space as well as weight.
