Why does the plane need to be balanced?
Does it matter where people sit?
An aircraft must be loaded so its centre of gravity sits inside safe limits, and its total weight must not exceed the limit for the runway, weather and route. The load sheet records the final numbers.
The load controller and dispatcher plan where bags and cargo go. Passenger numbers and fuel are included. From these figures the pilots set takeoff speeds and the stabiliser trim.
A little deeper
In their calculations airlines use average weights per passenger and bag, according to local regulation. Cargo is weighed exactly.
In smaller aircraft, individual passenger seating can matter more. On airliners, it's the total distribution.
