At the airport

What actually happens at check-in?

Why do I have to check in at all?

Check-in confirms that you, your travel documents and your bags are ready for the flight. The agent (or the kiosk or app) checks your identity and any required travel documents, assigns your seat, weighs and tags your bag and gives you a boarding pass.

The airline needs an accurate list of who is on board and how heavy the load is, because that affects fuel, balance and takeoff calculations.

Check-in typically closes 45 to 60 minutes before departure for a short-haul flight, but airlines and airports differ. Check your own.

A little deeper

Many airlines let you check in online or in an app from about 24 hours before departure. Airlines are responsible for checking visas and entry rules in many countries, which is part of why agents ask questions.

Bag tags carry a barcode (and sometimes RFID chip) that links the bag to your itinerary so that it can be sorted automatically.
