At the airport

What happens at security?

Why do I need to take my shoes and laptop out?

Security screening exists to keep prohibited items off aircraft. The process usually involves putting bags, coats and electronics in trays to go through an X-ray or CT scanner while you walk through a metal detector or body scanner.

Items like laptops and liquids may need to come out so the screener can see them clearly. Rules differ by country and airport (some airports with CT scanners let you leave them in), so follow the signs and the staff.

Screeners are trained to look for patterns, not to judge you. If your bag is picked for a further check, it is usually routine.

A little deeper

Security works in layers: checks before the airport, at the checkpoint, at the gate and by the crew. Hold baggage is screened separately.

Most body scanners use millimetre-wave technology and show a generic figure with highlighted areas, not an image of you. Everything differs by airport.
